This article is part of Football League World’s ‘Terrace Talk’ series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…
FLW’s Huddersfield Town fan pundit Graeme Rayner is conflicted over the possibility of David Wagner returning to the club.
The German has been linked with being reunited with the Terriers to fill the current managerial vacancy.
Danny Schofield departed earlier in the month and has yet to be replaced, with the team currently 23rd in the Championship table going into October.
Wagner first managed Huddersfield from 2015 to 2019, and was the first man to lead the club to the Premier League for their first top flight campaign since 1972.
This supporter would be happy to see the 50-year old make his comeback to the John Smith Stadium, but is concerned about potentially damaging his stellar reputation with the fans if things go poorly in a second stint.
“It’s a tough one,” Rayner told Football League World.
“The heart says yes, the head says no.
“I think this squad now is better than the one he actually inherited when he first took over years ago.
“But it would be a shame if it came back and didn’t work and tarnished what he achieved first time round.
“However, it would be something that would win fans over quickly, get fans back on Dean Hoyle’s side.
“I think the majority of fans would have an emotional relationship with him that they wouldn’t with any other new manager.
“So I would be cautiously delighted if he got the job.”

True False
Schofield lasted only 10 weeks in charge of the team, overseeing only one win in eight league games before being dismissed.
Meanwhile, Wagner is currently unemployed having gone on to manage the likes of Schalke and Young Boys since first departing Huddersfield in 2019.
The Verdict
There is always an element of risk bringing back an old manager or player to a club where they were once successful.
Wagner obviously has a great reputation for his first stint in charge, but there is a chance they fail to recapture what made everything work the first time round.
But if the board can get the deal over the line, then bringing in Wagner may be the best appointment available to the club.
He has a proven track record, has a lot of great experience and should be able to lift the team up the Championship table and well clear of a relegation battle.
