Huddersfield Town are in a dogfight down at the bottom of the Championship, as they look to avoid playing League One football next season for the first time since 2012.

The Terriers started the season with arguably the greatest Championship manager of all time in Neil Warnock, but he left in September and was replaced by former Sheffield Wednesday boss Darren Moore.

Moore was then relieved of his duties at the end of January after winning just three of his 23 games in charge, with the club looking outside of England for their next appointment.

That man ended up being German coach Andre Breitenreiter.

But since his appointment in mid-February, they have only won two of his twelve games in charge, which has left them in a perilous position of being second-bottom and three points adrift from safety.

With relegation a real possibility, several players could leave the club this summer if it becomes a reality.

Sorba Thomas is one of the players likely to leave Huddersfield if they go down

One of the players who could leave is winger Sorba Thomas.

The Wales international has been arguably Huddersfield’s best player this season, creating 122 chances in the Championship, more than any other player in the division.

This has led him to have four goals and nine assists so far, which is very impressive for a team fighting it out at the foot of the table.

FLW's Huddersfield Town fan pundit Graeme Rayner has spoken out over Thomas' situation, and has said that he expects Thomas to be sold if they are to be relegated, but insists that the club should not let him go on the cheap.

Graeme said: “Sorba Thomas, he is right up there in my eyes to be in contention for Player of the Year. My vote for Player of the Year goes to Michal Helik, but I think Sorba’s really up there because when he came back from his loan spell at Blackburn, he had to win the fanbase back over because he is viewed, in my opinion, slightly unfairly by a proportion of our fanbase, being petulant, moody, sometimes lazy.

“I don’t agree with that, he wears his heart on his sleeve and yes, sometimes his frustrations are very visible, but his frustrations are quite often well-placed and well-founded. So I don’t want him to go, but I would imagine most Championship teams would be looking at our squad, and thinking who they could cherry-pick from it should we go down.

“He’s got to be right at the top of that list I would say, I would say that Lee Nicholls would probably be up there, Michal Helik would be up there, and after he came back from his recent loan spell, Brodie Spencer would be up there as well.

“Sorba Thomas for me, if I was a manager in the Championship, probably barring any of the other sides that have recently been relegated if I was one of the 15-16 clubs in the Championship who know that they might be one or two players away from a play-off run, Sorba Thomas has got to be up there.

“But I would not let him go cheap, just because we are relegated does not mean we need to sell. If the new owner is going to put his money where his mouth is, we don’t need to sell. So make them pay for it, make them pay properly for it, but this guy went to the World Cup not long ago. So of course he should be snapped up, and good luck to him if he does go, he does not owe us anything.”

Huddersfield’s squad could be ransacked if they go down

If Huddersfield do end up getting relegated, then we could see a mass exodus in the summer, with a lot of their better players leaving.

Helik, Thomas and Nicholls are just a few of the players who could leave the club. It would not be surprising to see many players want to leave, with Huddersfield’s squad being a good Championship squad on paper.

Relegation would be detrimental to Huddersfield’s playing squad, and it would be a bitter demise, as they were one game away from getting back to the Premier League just two years ago when they lost in the play-off final to Nottingham Forest.

It would be hard to argue against any of them leaving either, with players like Thomas and Helik showing this season especially that they do not deserve to be playing in League One, and that they are too good for the level.
