Plymouth Argyle didn’t do themselves any favours on the weekend when it comes to survival.

Losing to Stoke City and former manager Steven Schumacher was bad enough, and then Sheffield Wednesday rubbed further salt into those green wounds on Sunday by beating Blackburn Rovers to escape the relegation zone.

There is still plenty of football to be played at the foot of the Championship, though, and one game in particular can make all the difference for Argyle in the form of Huddersfield Town v Birmingham City this coming Saturday.

The trip to the Bet365 Stadium was Plymouth’s best chance of securing a much-needed three points on this treacherous run-in.

Collating seven points from a possible nine in the wake of Ian Foster’s dismissal gave the Devonshire club a bit of breathing space, only for the Stoke defeat to bring things crashing down.

Matters were made worse when Wednesday won away at Ewood Park, moving the South Yorkshire club out of the bottom three.

Josh Windass' early strike was cancelled out by a 25th goal of the season from Championship top scorer Sammie Szmodics. Experienced wing-back Marvin Johnson restored the Owls' lead and then a horrendous error by Blackburn goalkeeper Aynsley Pears confirmed the three points from Wednesday.

This hasn't done Rovers any favours when it comes to their fight for survival and this also piles further pressure on Argyle. Having one more side to deny safety makes this a bigger headache for Neil Dewnsip and Kevin Nancekivell ahead of the final two games.

A trip to the capital to face Millwall at The Den is next up, before Argyle then host Hull City on the final day of the season. At the same time, there are games in and around them with enormous ramifications, most notably, the face-off between Huddersfield and Birmingham.

A crucial clash at the John Smith’s Stadium

As it stands, Birmingham and Huddersfield would be the two teams to join Rotherham United in suffering relegation into League One.

Twists and turns still lie ahead, though, and with the pair going toe-to-toe on Saturday, they will both fancy their chances of another year in the second tier if they seal three points.

On the flip side, a defeat for either of these teams could well be the fatal blow, particularly Huddersfield, who are in 23rd and three points away from safety. A defeat and a bad day with results elsewhere would relegate the Terriers.

Birmingham are a far cry from the side that John Eustace nurtured at the beginning of the campaign, and they're just two points ahead of the Terriers in 22nd. A lot has to happen this weekend to relegate them, but losing to Huddersfield would severely dent their survival chances with Norwich City on the final day.

Huddersfield endured late heartbreak in controversial circumstances when they played Bristol City recently. Nahki Wells converted a penalty in the 10th minute of added time to rescue the Robins a point. Town were on the receiving end of a one-sided scoreline after that - it wasn’t until the 73rd minute that Jamal Lowe got the breakthrough for Swansea City but, by the full-time whistle, it was 4-0 to the Welsh side.

In the meantime, Birmingham have had an up-and-down few weeks of action as well.

Drawing 0-0 away at already relegated Rotherham was two points dropped on the weekend, in truth, missing out on a win that could have made all the difference. Gary Rowett’s men can and have to redeem themselves when they make the trip to Huddersfield, a fixture that can decide the fate of numerous teams.

Those above the relegation zone will be hoping for a draw or Huddersfield victory, with Birmingham the best placed side of the two to survive, as well as having a handy goal difference.

A draw isn't really enough for either of these competing teams and will be celebrated in both Plymouth and Sheffield come Saturday night if that's the outcome. The last three meetings between these two sides have all gone the way of the home side, a factor which could tip the scale in the direction of a Huddersfield victory.

From a Plymouth perspective, though, they need to focus on themselves with two games still to go. This crucial clash between two fellow strugglers can serve as a safety blanket if they fail to deliver, though, knowing that someone below them is dropping points.

Their first focus, though, should be moving on quickly from the Stoke result as a paramount - that 3-0 embarrassment would be a thing of the past if they were to succeed in the next one, regardless of what goes on around them.

A win in either of the two remaining games has to be the aim for the Pilgrims, something which is perfectly achievable given that Millwall have nothing to play for and that Hull are stuttering in their play-off push under Liam Rosenior.

At the end of the day, Argyle’s Championship status remains in their hands and that is very valuable indeed.
