Germany have started EURO 2024 on fire, following up their 5-1 demolition of Scotland with a 2-0 win against Hungary.

Jamal Musiala and İlkay Gündoğan’s goals mean the hosts have already scored more goals in the group stages this summer than at their previous 12 European Championships.

Both a three-time winner and three-time runner-up, Germany have been the standard bearer for much of the competition’s history but not until now had they scored seven goals during the group stages surprisingly – their previous best was six at EURO 2020.

They have also equalled their great rivals, the Netherlands, for the most goals scored in the opening two games of the tournament.

Julien Nagelsmann will be hoping the 2014 World Cup parallel is a good omen as the Germans look to return to their former glories.
