Dennis Bayer reports that Freiburg talent and experienced Germany U21 international Merlin Röhl will be moving to Everton after all. The Toffees have long held interest in the 23-year-old, but interest declined amid Röhl’s struggles with injury and form. Reports about the Merseyside outfit’s interest in the Bundesliga professional emerging earlier today were thus treated cooly.
Röhl lost out on a chance to earn a regular place in head coach Julian Schuster’s starting XI during Freiburg training camp this summer. Used only as a substitute in Freiburg’s three competitive fixtures thus far this year, Bundesliga observers have watched the Potsdam native struggle with his confidence.
Röhl had an especially poor outing in a league fixture against 1. FC Köln yesterday. Introduced at the half, Röhl was unable to make an impact offensively. Freiburg conceded three goals during the second half en-route to an embarrassing 4-1 away loss to the newly promoted Geißböcke.
Despite all of his recent problems, Röhl remains a €12m-valued player. Everton appear ready to take a chance on him. Bayer and others report that Röhl is due in Vauxhall today for a medical.
