Huddersfield Town boss Mark Fotheringham has admitted that his quest to guide the Terriers to safety is the biggest challenge of his career so far, speaking to the Yorkshire Post.

The West Yorkshire outfit have endured a terrible season so far, also losing the likes of Harry Toffolo and Lewis O’Brien in the summer as well as former loanee Levi Colwill who has gone on to appear in the Premier League since then.

With the key trio departing as well as former boss Carlos Corberan, they have been unable to recover from that with the Terriers still sitting in the relegation zone at this stage.

What year was Huddersfield Town founded?

1878 1888 1898 1908

Winning against Preston North End and Rotherham United just after Christmas, they have gone winless in four league games since then and with this, they now look set to be at the bottom end of the division for the remainder of the campaign unless their form drastically improves.

They still have a great chance of securing survival though with just two points separating them and Cardiff City who are currently in 21st place and struggling massively despite the recent appointment of Sabri Lamouchi.

The West Yorkshire side also have two games in hand over the Bluebirds but despite this, Fotheringham believes keeping the Terriers afloat in the division may be a tall order.

He said: “It’s the biggest challenge I’ve had in my career so far, but I really believe in this group. I’ll do everything I possibly can to keep this great club in the league.”

The Verdict:

Not only did they lose Colwill, Corberan, O’Brien and Toffolo – but they also lost Naby Sarr and Pipa who were also important first-teamers with Jon Russell failing to replicate last season’s form before his switch to Charlton Athletic.

With this, you would certainly have agreed with Fotheringham about this being a massive challenge before but the January transfer window has allowed them to strengthen quite considerably.

Tomas Vaclik could be a good replacement for Lee Nicholls, Matt Lowton is an experienced head who could be crucial in their quest to survive and they have also added firepower in the firepower with Florian Kamberi, Anthony Knockaert, Martyn Waghorn and Joseph Hungbo all coming in.

In fairness, Kamberi wasn’t hugely prolific for Sheffield Wednesday last season, Hungbo is still inexperienced, Knockaert didn’t play a lot last season and Waghorn hasn’t been the most prolific scorer at Coventry.

But the quartet combined should be able to produce something meaningful and that’s one reason why the Terriers should be optimistic.
