Sorba Thomas has been a brilliant player forHuddersfield Town since his arrival.

He joined in January 2021 from non-league side Boreham Wood and has made the jump up to the Championship in fine fashion.

In his time in West Yorkshire, he has proven himself a real creative spark and was a vital part of the Terriers side that reached the Championship play-off final in 2021/22, narrowly losing to Nottingham Forest.

That success feels a long time ago now, however, as Huddersfield are embroiled in a relegation battle, trying to avoid playing in League One for the first time since 2012.

They are currently sat in the relegation zone, only behind Birmingham City in 21st on goal difference.

They started the season with Neil Warnock in charge but Darren Moore replaced him in September and the former Sheffield Wednesday manager was sacked at the end of January after a run of just one win in their last eleven league games.

His replacement came in German coach Andre Breitenreiter, who has so far only won one of his six games in charge.

His change in system is clearly taking a while for the squad to get used to while there is a strong argument to make that it is wasting one of his best attacking players in Thomas.

Thomas has been having a great season, arguably his best for the Terriers due to the fact he is playing for a team fighting it out near the bottom of the league.

So far in 35 league games he has scored four goals and got nine assists.

The Welsh international has created 103 chances, which is more than any other player in the division. He has also made 124 successful crosses, again more than anyone else in the division.

He has been primarily used at right wing-back in a 3-5-2, being able to put crosses in for the likes of Delano Burgzorg.

Overall, he has been one of the most creative players in the division. When Breitenreiter came in, it was pivotal that he tried to use one of his best players to the best of their abilities.

Andre Breitenreiter’s system is not utilising Thomas’ best abilities

However, the 50-year-old had different ideas.

The former Schalke and Hoffenheim manager has opted to stick with the same formation being used by his predecessor but has changed it around in terms of personnel.

Thomas has been used as a striker in the last two games, playing up top with Burgzorg. Brodie Spencer, who was recalled in January having spent the first half of the season on loan with Motherwell in Scotland, is preferred on the right-hand side.

With Thomas playing upfront, it completely negates his best attribute, his crossing. One of the reasons he has created so many chances this season is because of the number of successful crosses he has made - 124 in total, which is more than anyone else in the division. Playing him up front does not allow him to do what he does best.

With Huddersfield not picking up in form and the teams around them playing well, it would be a wise decision for Breitenreiter to change things up and get the best out of his players as we head into the most crucial part of the campaign.
