Sorba Thomas made a surprise loan move from relegation-battling Huddersfield Town to fourth-placed Blackburn Rovers this week, to bolster Jon Dahl Tomasson’s options in wide areas.

The Welshman has been a terrific addition to the Championship since swapping Boreham Wood for the Terriers in January 2021, and the 24-year-old will be aiming to put a disappointing first half of the season behind him at Ewood Park.

Rovers fell away from promotion contention last season under Tony Mowbray, and a repeat of that seems to be on the cards with Tomasson’s men being one of the strangest sides, statistically speaking, in the Championship for some years.

However, with Ben Brereton Diaz set to stay at the club for the rest of the season they cannot be written off, and it will be interesting to see what kind of contribution Thomas can make after entering a competitive attacking contingent.

Thomas took to Instagram to send a message to Rovers supporters ahead of this afternoon’s FA Cup clash with Birmingham City.

Thomas’ contract at Huddersfield has three years to run at the end of the season, and the remainder of this one could be an opportunity for the wideman to showcase his skillset ahead of potentially looking for a permanent move away, should the Terriers suffer relegation to the third tier.

When did Blackburn move into Ewood Park?

1881 1890 1885 1892

Luton Town, Millwall, Sunderland and West Bromwich Albion have all probably looked more convincing than Blackburn, as far as a play-off push is concerned this season, and the quartet are sat outside the top six at the moment.

Having said that, Rovers host rock bottom Wigan Athletic next time out in the league, and some further late window moves could increase their chances of staying put in the play-offs.

Thomas may have to bide his time to earn a run of league starts under Tomasson, but on the whole, from the outside looking in, he seems like a great character to add to the group, and may increase their threat from dead ball situations.
