Blackburn Rovers are going to have plenty of work to do over the course of the summer.

It has been a disappointing campaign for the Ewood Park club, who still find themselves battling to avoid relegation from the Championship.

As a result, the club will have to be active in the market come the end of the campaign, to ensure they can bounce back next season, whatever division they are in.

But while much of the focus ought to be on improving a first-team that has for the most part underwhelmed over much of the campaign, decisions may also have to be made on certain fringe players at Ewood Park.

In some cases, that will include dealing with further transfer interest in players who are currently playing out on loan from Blackburn Rovers elsewhere.

Motherwell keen on double Blackburn deal

Back in the January transfer window, striker Jack Vale left Blackburn on loan for the remainder of the season, linking up with Scottish Premiership side Motherwell.

That move saw the Welshman link up with another Blackburn man in the form of left-back Georgie Gent, who had previously moved to Fir Park on a season-long loan last summer.

Since then, both players have enjoyed impressive spells north of the border. In attack, Vale has scored three goals and provided two assists in 11 appearances for Motherwell.

Gent meanwhile, is currently getting his first taste of regular first-team football while playing in Lanarkshire, and has two goals and provided three assists in 26 appearances in total.

As a result, when speaking about the duo recently, Motherwell manager Stuart Kettlewell admitted that he would like to keep the pair at the club beyond the expiration of their loan deals at the end of this season.

There is though, arguably a case to be made that Blackburn ought to be giving a mixed response to this apparent request from Kettlewell come the summer.

When it comes to Vale, there may be a case to be made that the Ewood Park club could grant Kettlewell his wish here.

There is no denying that Rovers do need to boost their centre forward options in their squad, given the costly chances they have missed this season, and their reliance on Sam Szmodics in the number ten role for goals during the current campaign.

However, it is hard to feel as though Vale is really the right option to fill that role. The 23-year-old has already been given a chance at Ewood Park that he has not exactly taken.

In 25 senior appearances in all competitions for Blackburn, Vale has found the net on just two occasions, both of which have been in the cup competitions, rather than the Championship.

While both strikes were good finishes, that record does indicate that he is not making that impact on enough of a regular basis, to be relied on at Ewood Park, especially given he has struggled to impose himself in the all-round run of play in certain games for Rovers.

As a result, with the striker now entering the final year of his contract - admittedly with the option of a further 12 months - it could make sense for Blackburn to cash in on him, and raise some potentially much-needed finances in the summer, by giving Motherwell that chance to keep him at Fir Park.

By contrast, Gent is a player they may want to be less generous to Motherwell with. Ben Chrisene is only on loan at Blackburn himself until the end of this season.

Consequently, Rovers will find themselves once again with Harry Pickering as their only left-back option with any experience of playing regular senior football for the club.

There may therefore be a case that it could be sensible for Blackburn to keep Gent around, on the back of this loan where he has now got his own taste of consistent game under his belt, in order to provide some sort of senior back-up to Pickering for next season.

Indeed, that in turn would also give the club the chance to potentially source loans for some of their other young left-back options, such as Jake Batty or Lenni Cirino, to get them their own much-needed experience of regular football.
