Sheffield United are on the brink of losing one of their standout performers, with defender Anel Ahmedhodzic set for a move to Dutch giants Feyenoord. As reported by Sky Sports News’ Zinny Boswell and Rob Dorsett, the Bosnia international is “close to agreeing a deal” with Robin Van Persie’s Eredivisie side, bringing an end to a two-year stint at Bramall Lane.
With only one year remaining on his current contract, Sheffield United appear to have taken the pragmatic route by opting to cash in rather than risk losing Ahmedhodzic on a free next summer. The report explains that “United have decided now is the time to cash in”, signalling a financially motivated decision as the club gears up for life back in the Championship.
The timing is significant. With the Blades set to begin their Championship campaign against Bristol City this weekend, it looks increasingly likely that Ahmedhodzic will not be part of the matchday squad. “It is expected the centre-back will complete a move…before Sheffield United begin their Championship season”, Sky Sports confirm.
Feyenoord’s interest underlines Ahmedhodzic’s reputation across Europe. Since joining from Malmo in 2022, the 26-year-old has been a “key player for the Blades”, noted for his composure on the ball and defensive leadership. Feyenoord, managed by club legend Van Persie, are believed to be strengthening their back line ahead of a busy domestic and European campaign.
For Ahmedhodzic, the switch to the Eredivisie offers both a new challenge and an opportunity to feature in European competitions—an enticing prospect for any player at this stage of their career.
Losing Ahmedhodzic so close to the start of the season presents a fresh headache for United boss Ruben Selles. Defensive reinforcements will be needed quickly, and the club must act decisively to ensure the squad remains competitive in a notoriously gruelling Championship campaign.

From a Sheffield United fan perspective, this potential move may feel like a bitter pill to swallow. Ahmedhodzic has been one of the few consistent performers during a turbulent up and down time at for the club, and his leadership at the back will be sorely missed. Supporters will understand the financial reality—especially given his contract situation—but there will be concerns about whether the club can adequately replace him in time.
Many Blades fans might reflect on his impact since arriving from Malmo. His reading of the game, ability to carry the ball out of defence, and occasional goals made him a fan favourite. Losing him just days before the season opener adds further pressure to a squad already in transition.
Some fans may take heart in the fact that the club is acting early to resolve his future, rather than allowing the situation to drag on. However, questions will remain about recruitment strategy—is there a plan to bring in a proven Championship defender or will the club take a gamble on an unknown?
Overall, this deal, while not ideal in timing, could be the right move long-term—if United reinvest the fee wisely and strengthen key areas. Otherwise, the club risks beginning the new campaign on the back foot.
