Could Hamer be returning to the Netherlands to play for the Eredivisie champions?

Sheffield United midfielder Gus Hamer will be PSV Eindhoven’s top target to replace Joey Veerman, should he head to Brentford or another club before Monday’s transfer deadline, sources have exclusively informed Football League World.

The Blades have had a rotten start to the 2025-26 Championship season, losing all four of their opening league matches, and the pressure is already on head coach Ruben Selles, who replaced the popular Chris Wilder over the summer following their play-off final defeat to Sunderland.

Transfer business had been sparse at Bramall Lane until recently, with owners COH Sports focusing on loan deals for most of the window, but activity has ramped up, with the likes of Japhet Tanganga and Nils Zatterstrom signing for transfer fees from Millwall and Malmo respectively.

What United can ill-afford to happen before Monday’s 7pm transfer deadline however is to lose one of their top stars, but a big European club could be set to test their resolve.

PSV Eindhoven plotting fresh Gus Hamer move

FLW has been told that Sheffield United’s star attraction Gus Hamer is back on PSV Eindhoven’s radar ahead of tomorrow’s deadline.

Hamer was linked to the current Eredivisie champions earlier in the summer, but a deal never arose, with the 28-year-old starting the 2025-26 campaign at Bramall Lane.

However, PSV could yet lose a key midfielder in the form of Joey Veerman in the final few days of their own transfer window, with the Netherlands international the subject of interest and transfer offers from Premier League side Brentford.

The Bees have had a bid of £25 million turned down for the 26-year-old and have been told that Veerman isn’t for sale, however if that changes and they accept a renewed offer, Hamer will be PSV’s first-choice replacement, FLW can exclusively reveal.

The Dutch transfer window does not close until Tuesday September 2, but if a deal is to be done, Sheffield United will want it done as soon as possible, given they would need to source a Hamer replacement at the very last minute.

What Ruben Selles has said about Gus Hamer’s Sheffield United future ahead of deadline day

Sheffield United fans will have wanted a confident answer on Hamer’s future from under-pressure head coach Selles, but he could not provide it.

Speaking after United’s 1-0 defeat at Middlesbrough on Saturday, Selles said of the Dutch maestro: "Well, I don't know. Gustavo has been trying to give absolutely all of himself for Sheffield United since he arrived two years ago.

“And then now I think he's trying to be that person, that type, to take responsibility. And hopefully it's for much longer.

"As far as I know, there is nothing there. But as I always told you, I can’t predict the future. I don't know what's going to happen in the next 48 hours.”
