Speaking after their 1-0 loss at Middlesbrough, Sheffield United boss Ruben Selles mentioned the future of Gus Hamer; it's not good news for Blades.

Sheffield United manager Ruben Selles addressed the future of in-demand Gus Hamer following their 1-0 defeat to Middlesbrough on Saturday - and could not guarantee that the Dutchman would still be a Blade after the transfer deadline on Monday.

A trip to Teesside brought a fourth consecutive League defeat for the Blades, leaving them rooted to the bottom of the Championship table - a result which saw the pressure continue to increase under new manager Ruben Selles.

The club have been extremely active in the transfer market over the last week of the summer window as they seek to arrest their unexpectedly slow start to the season.

But the transfer market isn't all about bringing new players in. Sheffield United still have players that are wanted by other clubs, and one of their most in-demand players is Gus Hamer, who has been the subject of considerable speculation all summer.

Speaking after the match at Middlesbrough, Blades manager Ruben Selles was asked directly about the status of Hamer, and his reply, as reported by the Sheffield Star, will not fill Blades fans with optimism that the player is going to be staying with the club.

Asked whether he believed that Hamer would still be a Sheffield United player by the closure of the summer transfer window, the Blades boss said: "Well, I don't know. Gustavo has been trying to give absolutely all of himself for Sheffield United since he arrived two years ago."

“And then now I think he's trying to be that person, that type, to take responsibility. And hopefully it's for much longer.

"As far as I know, there is nothing there. But as I always told you, I can’t predict the future. I don't know what's going to happen in the next 48 hours.”

It will strike little confidence into Blades fans that Hamer will definitely be staying at the club, with plenty of speculation over his future in South Yorkshire.

As the 2024-25 Championship Player of the Year, Gus Hamer has been one of the most in-demand Sheffield United players over the course of what has been an extremely busy transfer window for the club.

10 new players have arrived at Bramall Lane so far, with five having left the club and seven having returned to their parent clubs following the end of their loan spells last season.

And at the end of last week, came some "bombshell" news regarding the player's future when it was reported that he could be leaving Bramall Lane on a loan-to-buy deal before Monday’s transfer deadline, with FourFourTwo reporting that Hamer could leave the club temporarily, with an obligation to buy included in a potential deal worth between £15 million and £20 million.

PSV have been touted as a major contender for Hamer's signature. Although born in Brazil, Hamer moved to the Netherlands as a child and started his professional career with the Rotterdam giants Feyenoord.

But he has also been closely linked to a move to Leeds United, with The Athletic's Beren Cross claiming on August 18 that Hamer is an option for them to sign that has been discussed, and Selles' comments will be sure to pique the interest of the powers-that-be at Elland Road.

A move across Yorkshire would be less upheaval for the player, as well as securing him a return to the Premier League.
