Toni Kroos, one of Real Madrid’s modern icons, has made it clear that he believes Manchester City midfielder Rodri should be the club’s top transfer target.

Speaking in an interview with El Pais Semanal, Kroos openly praised the Manchester City midfielder, describing him as one of the most irreplaceable players in world football today.

Kroos highlighted how crucial the defensive midfield role has become in modern football.

“Look at what happened to Manchester City after a player like Rodri got injured. What happens is that a good central midfielder or defensive midfielder is missed.

“When he’s not there. When he is there, it is something you take for granted. It’s like you don’t notice. It is like everything is in order and then the forwards can finish games with ease,” he explained.

Kroos compared Rodri’s presence on the pitch to an invisible force that organises the game, allowing forwards to finish matches without worrying about the build-up play.

“One thing is clear, and that is that the central midfield position is fundamental in modern football, there’s no doubt about it,” he explained.

Rodri has been on Real Madrid’s radar for quite some time, but signing him will not be straightforward. The Spanish international’s contract with Manchester City runs until 2027, and Pep Guardiola’s side are eager to extend it.

City know that if they don’t secure a renewal soon, the situation could become risky, especially with the 2026 World Cup approaching.

If Rodri enters the final year of his contract without an extension, his market value would naturally drop, making a transfer more feasible. That scenario is exactly why Real Madrid are keeping a close watch.

Los Blancos are aware that the defensive midfield position is one of their key weaknesses moving forward, and no one fits the role better than Rodri.

For Madrid, the idea is to act when the timing is right. A move this summer seems unlikely due to the high cost and City’s reluctance to sell.

However, if contract talks between Rodri and City stall, Madrid could see an opening next year.
