Rangers have a chance to reach the final of the League Cup today as they face Hibernian ahead of Gio van Bronckhorst’s official arrival at the club.

He will not be in the dugout taking charge of the team, despite being announced as the new head coach earlier this week, but could be in the stands watching his players in action.

The Dutchman will take the reins on Monday and could walk into a side who just reached a cup final, leaving him with the opportunity to win a trophy early on in his Gers career.

Not good enough

One change Rangers must make to the XI against Hibernian in order to ensure that they do reach the final is axing goalkeeper Allan McGregor.

The £13k-per-week dud has been a liability between the sticks for the Gers this season. He has not kept a clean sheet in six Premiership appearances and has a save percentage of 50% – meaning he lets in every other shot on target in the league.

McGregor also has a save percentage of 42.9% in Europe, highlighting his weakness in goal this season. This suggests that he has not been good enough for Rangers and is liable to make mistakes, as he has been unable to save a high percentage of the shots against him. He has been beaten far too often and his lack of clean sheets is a result of his poor shot-stopping.

Earlier this season, former Premier League forward Gabriel Agbonlahor admitted that it is normal for McGregor to be rotated at his age, with the shot-stopper turning 40 in January, as he has struggled to maintain consistency in his form.

“That’s going to happen, you’re going to be rotated.

“At McGregor’s age, you’re going to get those moments when you’re in and out of the team. He’s been a great servant to the game, a great servant to Rangers.

“So, I’m sure that he’ll play his fair share of games for Rangers and they’ll still get some good performances out of him.”

Jon McLaughlin, his main competition, has saved 58.3% of the shots against him and kept two clean sheets in his six Premiership appearances. Therefore, Rangers could benefit from bringing him in to replace McGregor against Hibs as they go in search of progression to the final.
