City came into this clash level on points with league leaders Chelsea and looking to claim the victory that would take them to the summit of the Women’s Super League.

But it was United who impressed early on as Nikita Parris forced Khiara Keating into a smart save after only 12 minutes.

The hosts eventually tested Mary Earps midway through the first half as Jess Park’s long range effort was tipped around the post by the England number one.

Just a few moments later though, Park netted her first ever goal for the club as she arrived late in the area and fired in first time with a brilliant, cushioned effort.

City thought they had doubled their lead just a few seconds later as Shaw tapped in, but the in-form striker saw her effort ruled out for offside.

They did get their second just before half time as Park ghosted into the area and reacted quickest to tap in for a second.

After the break Shaw made City history as she slotted home after only 34 seconds to score her 68th for the club to become their leading all-time goalscorer.

United managed to get themselves back in the game with 15 minutes remaining however, as Kerstin Casparij deflected a cross past Keating an into her own net.
