Manchester United have an interest in signing Benfica centre-back Antonio Silva, according to Portuguese publication Record (page 16).

The 19-year-old has made huge strides since his debut last year and he is currently one of the most sought-after youngsters.

The Portuguese is already a regular for his club and country and it may not be long before he pursues a big-money move elsewhere.

Record now claim that United hold a keen interest in the teenager, but he is not dazzled by the prospect of moving to the Premier League.

Instead, he holds Real Madrid in high regard and considers them as the greatest among European clubs.

Madrid are also interested in a future deal for him but as things stand, Silva is happy to stay with Benfica and wants to become captain.

The centre-back won’t force a move away from Benfica, but he is prepared to listen if the club decide to consider his sale in future.

Any club interested in signing him may have to trigger the €120 million release clause in his contract.

United should swoop for Silva next summer

Silva made his debut in September 2022 after an injury crisis. He has since evolved into a crucial player for Benfica at the heart of the defence.

This season, he has completed a stunning 94 per cent of his passes in Primeira Liga. He has won 3.4 tackles and 6.1 duels per game alongside four clearances.

The 19-year-old has all the traits to become a world-class defender. He has been dubbed as the ‘new Ruben Dias‘ and has the potential to become even better.

In our view, United should make him the priority target for next summer. Benfica are not an easy club to negotiate with, but could accept a long-term payment plan.

This would put United safe with Financial Fair Play. It remains to be seen whether they can persuade him to join if Madrid also make a genuine effort to land his services.
