Here's what went down.

Portugal reach quarter-finals after shoot-out win over Slovenia

Portugal defeated a brave Slovenia side after a dramatic penalty shoot out ended 3-0, following a scoreless 120 minutes of action.

Another cagey first half saw Cristiano Ronaldo take plenty of shots, but failed to come close to scoring.

It was João Palhinha who went closest in the opening 45 minutes, hitting the post with an off-balance shot after having been played in by Rafael Leão.

Into the second half and Benjamin Šeško found himself in a foot race with Pepe into the box, but the Portuguese veteran just did enough to put him off and he scuffed his shot wide.

A perfectly organised Slovenian defence kept Portugal at bay in normal time, as the tie finished scoreless after 90 minutes.

Into extra time and Ronaldo had a golden chance to put his side ahead when Diogo Jota was fouled inside the box. His penalty was struck well, but Jan Oblak pulled off an incredible save to deny him.

As the game edged towards penalties, Šeško once again had a glorious chance to score following a mistake from Pepe, but had a weak effort saved by Diogo Costa.

Slovenia missed their first two penalties, while Cristiano Ronaldo and Bruno Fernandes scored their attempts. A third Slovenia penalty was saved by Diogo Costa and Bernardo Silva made no mistake to put Portugal into the quarter-final.

France win low quality affair in Dusseldorf

Scorers: Kolo Muani 85'

A late deflected effort from Randal Kolo-Muani saw France edge past Belgium by a goal to nil in a game that lacked any real quality.

Dominic Tedesco set his Belgium side up more defensively against the World champions than he had in the group stages, with Kevin de Bruyne deployed in central midfield alongside Amadou Onana.

It was a move that worked well to stifle the French, but meant that Belgium offered little going forwards, failing to have an effort on target in the first half.

Much of Les Bleus threat came through Kylian Mbappé, whose pace in particular caused the Red Devils problems throughout.

Belgium improved in the second half, with De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku both testing Mike Maignan.

But it was France who finally found a breakthrough, courtesy of substitute Randal Kolo-Muani.

Receiving the ball with his back to goal, he fired in a scuffed effort that took a deflection off Jan Vertonghen and left Koen Casteels stranded in an effort that summarised the quality on show in Düsseldorf.

However, it proved enough to see Didier Deschamps side into the last eight of the competition, where they will face one of Portugal or Slovenia in the next round.
