According to Tot Costa, Lionel Messi is a ‘real option’ for Barcelona ahead of the summer transfer window, with the operation to re-sign the former club captain starting to move forward.

Messi left Barça back in the summer of 2021 after the club failed to renew his expired contract due to financial issues. The 35-year-old signed for PSG on a two-year deal with an option for an additional twelve months.

Messi’s contract with PSG expires at the end of the season. And while there had been talks of a possible renewal, recent reports suggest that the Argentina captain is having second thoughts about continuing in Paris.

Amidst this, the rumours of a possible return to Barcelona have been gaining weight with each passing day as the seven-time Ballon d’Or wants to remain in Europe, which means the options of the MLS, Argentina, and the Middle East are off the table.

In fact, some reports have even gone on to suggest that Messi is prioritising a return to Barça, even though, at this point the only concrete offer that he has in front of him is that of PSG.

The Catalans are dreaming of bringing back their club legend for one last dance. Finances, however, do not make it easy as the Blaugrana need to reduce their wage bill by a huge amount before they can think about making any new signings.

The relationship between the club and Messi’s camp were also understood to have deteriorated after his exit, but is said to be improving. And it is reckoned that if president Joan Laporta makes efforts, Messi would be very much open to coming back to the club.

The operation will be anything but straightforward for the club to pull off, given the complications involved.

But, Messi’s potential return is seen as a ‘real option’ now and things are slowly starting to move forward. Only time will tell, whether everything falls into place for the prodigal son to come back home.
