Isaac Hayden has proven a smart signing for QPR since joining the club in the January transfer window.

The midfielder spent the first half of the campaign in Belgian football, making a run of starts at Standard Liege, but he headed back to England in the January window with his loan terminated.

He has become a key part of Martí Cifuentes’ QPR side since arriving from St. James’ Park on transfer deadline day, giving the Hoops a bit of extra bite in the middle of the park.

The 28-year-old has been a consistent presence in the side since joining, and has played a role in the team’s rise up the Championship table.

Given his impact, QPR may look to turn this into a permanent transfer by the end of the season if they can earn survival in the second division.

Newcastle’s Isaac Hayden stance

According to Chronicle Live, the Magpies are keen to offload Hayden from their books this summer as they look to reduce the size of their wage bill.

The midfielder still has two years remaining on his contract, but this situation could lead to him being available at a cut-rate price.

This would be ideal for Rangers, who themselves aren’t exactly flush with cash going into the next transfer window.

QPR’s survival hopes will underpin a lot of their summer planning at the moment, but if they can keep their place in the Championship then a move for Hayden could make a lot of sense for all parties.

He has fit in well with Cifuentes’ style of play and could be reasonably affordable transfer fee-wise, with Newcastle keen to get rid.

He has made six starts for QPR, with the team earning 11 points from a possible 18 in that period, and two substitute appearances have also come.

Smart January business might just save the team’s status in the second tier, which is incredibly encouraging to supporters, and Hayden is a part of that.

Hayden stumbling block for QPR

However, one stumbling block could be Hayden’s reported wage at St. James’ Park.

The Englishman is reportedly earning £50,000 per week from the Premier League side, which would be far beyond what QPR would surely be willing to pay any player.

While he has made a positive impact on the team since joining in January, there is very little to suggest he would be worth adding at that kind of cost, especially at the age of 28.

It is clear that Hayden will have to take a significant pay cut in order to complete a move to Loftus Road on a permanent basis.

Estimated figures from Capology suggest that Asmir Begovic is the club’s highest paid player, with a weekly wage of £32,500.

Steve Cook, Lyndon Dykes and Taylor Richards are the next best paid, with a steep decline in the size of their wages at £30,000, £18,000 and £15,000 per week, respectively.

Hayden may have to settle for a similar amount if his is to value regular playing time over outright pay.

Otherwise, sitting on the bench at Newcastle for another two years is the alternative option, as it’s unlikely anyone will match that kind of salary, let alone QPR.
