Midfielder George Honeyman has sent a message to Millwall supporters after leaving The Den to join Blackpool.
Midfielder George Honeyman has issued an emotional farewell message to Millwall supporters after leaving the club to join League One side Blackpool.
Honeyman joined Millwall from Hull City in the summer of 2022, and he was a regular for the club over the past three years under a host of different managers, including Gary Rowett, Joe Edwards, Neil Harris and Alex Neil.
The 30-year-old scored two goals and provided six assists in 45 appearances in all competitions last season as the Lions narrowly missed out on the Championship play-off places, eventually finishing eighth in the table following a strong second half of the campaign after Neil's arrival in December.
With his contract expiring this summer, Honeyman had been in talks with Millwall about a possible new deal, but he has decided against extending his stay at The Den in order to make the move to Blackpool, and the Seasiders' interest in the midfielder was exclusively revealed by FLW earlier this month.
After signing a two-year contract at Bloomfield Road, Honeyman confirmed that he did have offers from elsewhere, but he said that the faith Tangerines manager Steve Bruce, who he worked with earlier in his career at Sunderland, showed in him helped to convince him to make the switch to Lancashire.
After his departure from Millwall was confirmed, Honeyman penned a heartfelt goodbye message to Lions supporters, insisting that the club will go on to have plenty of success in the future with the current management and squad, and he claimed that the atmosphere at The Den is one of the best he has ever experienced in his career.
"Firstly, I'd like to say these past three years have been a life-changing experience and how you've made my wife and I feel at home from day one - I'd like to thank you," Honeyman said in a message posted on the club's official X account.
"We've been through a lot with the tragic losses of John Berylson and Matija Sarkic since my time here and feeling the Millwall love from players, staff and fans alike is something I'll treasure.
"The club is in fantastic hands with a great Chairman, staff and players, who I have no doubt will give you some more fantastic memories in the future like we've had together.
"To the lads in the dressing room - you have something special in there and through the good and bad times - never lose that spirit.
"Lastly, to you, the fans, thank you for giving me some of the best atmospheres I've ever been a part of. It's a truly special place to play.
"Never forget how important it is to have that famous Millwall roar."
Honeyman has been an excellent servant to Millwall over the past three years, bringing a tireless work ethic to the team, as well as providing a creative spark.
The midfielder was unable to help the Lions reach the Premier League, but he was part of the sides that agonisingly fell short of the play-offs on the final days of the 2022-23 and 2024-25 seasons, and he will be fondly remembered for the performances he produced during his time at The Den.
After George Saville turned down the chance to stay at the club to join Luton Town, Millwall supporters may be a little concerned that Honeyman has also decided to drop down to League One rather than sign a new contract, but it is possible that the pair were not provided with the necessary guarantees of regular game time next season.
