Real Betis star Isco Alarcon has been ruled out of the Euros after a stellar campaign at the Benito Villamarin. The 32-year-old had found his best form again after four years of little football, but will be robbed of the crowning glory of his return to action.

The 32-year-old signed with Betis on a free after leaving rivals Sevilla in December 2022, and immediately began directing things for Manuel Pellegrini’s side. Isco has won more man of the match awards than anyone else in La Liga this season, and is widely regarded as their player of the season.

It had been hotly debated whether his form could earn him a place in the Spain side for the Euros in Germany this summer, and as per Marca, Isco was to be included by Luis de la Fuente. However coming off with an injury during Betis’ 2-2 draw with Las Palmas on Thursday night, Isco was admitted for tests on Friday, and diagnosed with a fracture in his fibula. Betis will now decide whether he should undergo surgery, but the implication is that he will be out for at least two months.

It’s a bitter blow for the former Real Madrid and Malaga playmaker, and for fans of Spanish football, who had generally been delighted by his return to form. One of the most entertaining and gifted players in the game, Isco played in the 2018 World Cup, but otherwise has never been to major tournament with Spain.
