Cristiano Ronaldo cried after Al-Nassr suffered a penalty shoot-out defeat against Al-Hilal in the Saudi King’s Cup final on Friday.
The 39-year-old scored a record-breaking 35 goals to claim the Saudi Pro League Golden Boot for this season.
Despite his goalscoring feats, the Knights of Najd finished 14 points behind Al-Hilal in the table.
The five-time Ballon d’Or winner had a chance to win a trophy this season by winning the Saudi King’s Cup final but failed to lead his side to victory despite hitting the target in the shoot-out.
Following the disappointing defeat at the King Abdullah Sports City, Ronaldo sank to the grass and cried inconsolably for a while.
Al-Hilal were heading for victory after Aleksandar Mitrovic’s early goal, but Ayman Yahya sent the game to extra time with an 88th-minute equaliser.
The referee sent off three players in the second half, with David Ospina, Ali Al-Bulayhi and Kalidou Koulibaly all receiving their marching orders.
Al-Hilal goalkeeper Yassine Bounou was the hero for his side in the shoot-out. The Moroccan saved the final two penalties to lead his side to a 5-4 success.
