Real Madrid right-back Lucas Vazquez was not impressed with Spain manager Luis de la Fuente’s decision to leave him out of the preliminary squad for Euro 2024. De la Fuente named a 29-man squad list with colleagues Nacho Fernandez, Joselu Mato and Dani Carvajal included.

Just after the announcement was made, Vazquez tweeted out two laughing faces, but just minutes later removed it from his account. That did not stop it from being captured though.

Ahead of him, Real Madrid teammate Carvajal is likely to be the starter, while Sevilla captain Jesus Navas looks to be his back-up. Nacho and Marcos Llorente could also fill in there if needed.

The 38-year-old Navas will be playing in his final international tournament with Spain, and de la Fuente commented that he was ‘born to compete at an international level’, and had ‘never let us down’ when he was asked about his selection. Meanwhile Tottenham Hotspur also put out a curiously timed tweet about Pedro Porro, who has also been a frequent part of de la Fuente’s squads, but has been left out.

Vazquez has enjoyed a good season when called upon in the absence of Carvajal, although he was exposed against Bayern Munich in the Champions League. Navas has not had his finest season this year, but has been consistent as ever, and brings a wealth of leadership and experience to the role, which will likely only see him given fleeting minutes in place of Carvajal too.

Since the tweet was deleted, Vazquez, while on Real Madrid duty atteneding the media day for the Champions League final denied that it had anything to do with the national team, and said he would give all of his support to them, although he decided against explaining what he was laughing at.
