Barcelona were held to a 1-1 draw against Rayo Vallecano at the always challenging Vallecas Stadium on Matchday 3 of La Liga.
The game was marked by high tension, difficult conditions, and plenty of talking points.
Barça started strongly and went ahead through a penalty that sparked debate, calmly converted by Lamine Yamal.
However, the lead did not last long as Rayo hit back. Fran Perez found the equaliser after connecting well from a corner, leaving Barcelona frustrated.
Heading into the international break, Barça dropped their first points of the season. Hansi Flick made no effort to hide his disappointment after the final whistle.
“We lacked intensity and made mistakes. We can do better,” he admitted, clearly unhappy with the performance.
The coach was critical in his assessment of the match: “We made a lot of mistakes. We had the second goal. Rayo played fantastically. I’m not happy with my team today; we had a lot of losses today.”
The game itself was far from straightforward. The pitch was in poor condition, the home fans created a tense atmosphere, and there was even the unusual situation of a missing VAR monitor.

Flick shared his thoughts on these issues, saying, “The VAR has to work. I don’t know what we should do, but we couldn’t do anything about it. It’s not my job to suggest anything.”
Despite the difficulties, Flick refused to use excuses. “It shouldn’t serve as an excuse. We made mistakes in the end, and that condemned us,” he added.
The German coach also praised the work of Rayo boss Inigo Perez and highlighted the impressive display of his own goalkeeper.
“He did a great job; we already knew his style. We should have controlled the ball better. We made a lot of mistakes.
“But I must say that Joan Garcia had a fantastic game today. I’m very happy with him because he stopped Rayo’s chances.
“He’s fast, plays very well on the ball and between the posts, and he didn’t make any mistakes.”
Looking ahead, Flick wants his team to raise their level after the international break and addressed the ongoing transfer speculation regarding Fermin Lopez.
“I’m looking forward to the transfer market being over; I don’t want egos. Egos kill success. Last year we were a team, and we must continue to be that way,” he concluded.
