Napoli have parted company with coach Rudi Garcia after Sunday’s 1-0 defeat to Empoli, appointing Walter Mazzarri as his replacement. Garcia, in charge for only 16 games, couldn’t maintain the success achieved by Luciano Spalletti last season. Napoli, reigning champions, have struggled to defend their title, suffering three home defeats in six Serie A games. Mazzarri, a former Napoli coach, returns after being out of work since May 2022, reportedly beating out Fabio Cannavaro and Igor Tudor for the job.
Aaron Ramsdale’s father has criticised Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta for not explaining why his son was dropped in favour of David Raya. Ramsdale, who started in Arsenal’s first four Premier League games, lost his starting position after Raya’s arrival. His father Nick has now expressed concern about his son losing his enthusiasm and finding it difficult without an explanation from Arteta. Despite signing a long-term deal in May, Ramsdale has been relegated to the bench since Raya’s loan arrival in August. Nick Ramsdale revealed his son’s expected role as the cup goalkeeper, with Raya as the primary choice, though Aaron hasn’t received official confirmation.
Jude Bellingham and Levi Colwill have withdrawn from England’s squad after both sustained shoulder injuries while playing for their respective clubs. Bellingham was injured in Real Madrid’s game against Rayo Vallecano, and Colwill picked up the same issue before Chelsea’s clash with Manchester City. The pair will miss the UEFA Euro 2024 qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia. Marcus Rashford and Kalvin Phillips will join the squad later due to personal matters. The withdrawals add to the list which also includes James Maddison, Callum Wilson and Lewis Dunk.
Cole Palmer, in fine form for Chelsea, has earned his first senior call-up to the England national team at 21. Having scored four times in the Premier League this season, including a crucial penalty against former club Manchester City on Sunday, Palmer joins the squad alongside Rico Lewis and Ezri Konsa due to withdrawals. A clip of Palmer expressing disbelief at the call-up was released by England on Tuesday. With England already qualified for Euro 2024, it remains to be seen if Palmer will feature in upcoming matches against Malta or North Macedonia.
Juventus have extended midfielder Nicolò Fagioli’s contract until 2028 despite his seven-month ban for betting breaches. The club have expressed their support for Fagioli’s rehabilitation and value his importance on and off the pitch. The 22-year-old, known for his technical skill and tactical intelligence, has made 45 appearances for Juventus, scoring three goals and providing six assists. Fagioli, currently serving his suspension, faces a €12,500 fine and gambling addiction therapy but is expected to return to action in May.
