Everton have been hit with a 10-point deduction for breaching the Premier League’s Financial Fair Play rules, marking the first such penalty for a top-flight English club. The independent commission found the club exceeded the £105m threshold for losses in the 2021/22 season, resulting in a £124.5m loss. Everton plan to appeal, calling the punishment disproportionate and unjust. The deduction drops them from 14th to 19th in the Premier League, increasing relegation concerns. The ruling follows a £300m loss over 2019-2022, with Everton citing pandemic-related and stadium infrastructure costs as contributing factors.
Burnley, Leeds United and Leicester City plan to sue Everton for £300m following the Toffees’ 10-point deduction for breaching Financial Fair Play rules. The clubs, previously in relegation battles with Everton, allege a £100m shortfall each due to the Toffees’ breaches, with legal action imminent.
Jude Bellingham has won the 2023 Golden Boy award, joining the ranks of Lionel Messi, Wayne Rooney and Erling Haaland. The England international, now with Real Madrid after a €103m transfer from Borussia Dortmund, has impressed with 14 goals in 17 appearances under coach Carlo Ancelotti.
Real Madrid’s Eduardo Camavinga has suffered an injury to his right knee, rupturing external lateral ligaments while on international duty with France. Scans confirm a two-month recovery period, ruling him out for the rest of the year. This adds to manager Carlo Ancelotti’s injury worries, with Aurélien Tchouaméni and Vinícius Júnior also sidelined.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta faces a potential touchline ban after being charged by the FA for criticising referees following the recent 1-0 defeat to Newcastle. Arteta described a VAR decision as a “disgrace” and felt “ashamed” of the officiating. While Arsenal supported his comments in a statement, the club won’t face punishment. Arteta, charged with misconduct, has until Tuesday to respond. If found guilty, he could receive a fine or ban.
