Chelsea are progressing with talks regarding the signing of free-scoring Montpellier forward Elye Wahi (20), according to a report tonight from Foot Mercato. The South London side would then loan the 20-year-old sensation to RC Strasbourg Alsace for the 2023/24 campaign. The Alsatians have been bought by the American owners of Chelsea FC, BlueCo. The Montpellier youth product has been arguably Ligue 1’s breakout player this past campaign, registering 19 goals and six assists in 33 league games.

The French publication understand that talks are well advanced with all the parties involved. Foot Mercato add that the West London side hope to wrap up the signing of Wahi – and his consequent season-long loan to Strasbourg – as early as this week. Wahi is tied to La Paillade with a contract set to expire in 2025. There is an acceptance that Wahi will leave the Hérault side this summer. However, one can imagine that the Montpellier executives won’t be too pleased to know that Wahi could be close to joining one of their Ligue 1 rivals, even if it is for one season.

Foot Mercato add that Inter Milan, who recently ended all negociations with Belgian striker Romelu Lukaku, still believe in their chances to lure the U21 France international. The size of the eventual fee is currently unknown.
