🌎 Mexico crash out as Venezuela and Ecuador advance out of Group B | OneFootball

Copa América Group B came to its conclusion Sunday evening as Venezuela cruised to a first-place finish will Ecuador held on against Mexico to secure second.

Here is what went down in the two games.

Mexico 0-0 Ecuador

Mexico’s Copa América came to a screeching halt when they failed to find a way past Ecuador, who snuck into second place in the group.

With Mexico needing a win, the ball was in their court to push the tempo and look for the opening goal.

They did just that, but like the first two games in the group, the likes of Santi Giménez and Julián Quiñones struggled to find the final finish and open the scoring.

After the break Mexico continued to pour on the pressure but continually failed to find the target, and with each passing missed attempt the tension inside the ground mounted.

Mexico had not one, but two hand-ball shouts waved off leaving Jaime Lozano’s men feeling aggrieved. To make matters worse, a penalty-kick given to Mexico on the field was waved off in stoppage-time after a VAR check revealed that the Ecuadorian defender made contact with the ball on the foul in question.

Eventually El Tri ran out of steam as the clock ticked up towards 100 minutes as a desperately frustrating night and tournament came to a close.

Ecuador will move on and face Argentina in the quarter-final.

Jamaica 0-3 Venezuela

Scorers: Bello 49′, Rondón 56′

Venezuela capped off their impressive Group B showing by cruising past Jamaica.

It has not been a tournament to remember from Jamaica, but that didn’t stop them from pushing for the opener. The Venezuela rearguard found little trouble dealing with the Reggae Boyz pressure however.

After the break Venezuela regained control and found the lead that they desired when Eduard Bello broke the deadlock just minutes after the restart.

The game was all but wrapped up less than 10 minutes later when Salomón Rondón bagged Venezuela’s second on the night. Rondón’s strike was followed up by a late Eric Ramírez goal to cap off a dominant second-half showing.

Venezuela will now face Canada in the quarter-final.
