RC Lens’ Georges Mikautadze move dependent on Premier League-linked Elye Wahi

Georges Mikautadze (23) is currently flourishing at Euro 2024, helping Georgia secure a historic qualification for the knockout stages by scoring three goals in the opening three games. Currently at FC Metz, the striker said prior to the tournament that he would be remaining in Ligue 1 and therefore leaving Les Grenats, who were relegated to Ligue 2.

However, his destination is not looking any clearer. It had looked as if he would join AS Monaco, however, they are no longer in pole position to sign the Georgia international. They remain in the race but have now been caught by the chasing pack. Olympique Lyonnais had looked to be a credible destination, however, that deal now looks very unlikely after Alexandre Lacazette chose to see out the remaining year of his contract, rather than move to the Saudi Pro League.

RC Lens have also been linked but the move is complex and financially difficult. Metz, prior to Euro 2024 were asking for around €20m for Mikautadze; given his performance in the ongoing tournament in Germany, it is perfectly possible that that valuation has risen.

In order to pull off the move, Les Sang et Or would have to sell, given the new austere regime being imposed by the club’s president. Elye Wahi is the prime candidate to be sold. The France youth international arrived for big money from Montpellier HSC last summer but underwhelmed. Lens are now looking to cash-in, amid interest from an unnamed Premier League side, according to Foot Mercato journalist Sébastien Denis. Wahi very much remains the key for Lens, if they are to move for Mikautadze.
