The newly-promoted second tier side were keen on signing the 24-year-old on an initial loan deal with an option to buy, but his club, Kyoto Sanga, are only interested in a permanent exit, as per the Daily Mail.

Kyoto Sanga are currently fourth in the J1 League, the top flight of Japanese football, with Fukuda having captained them on a couple of occasions and been a regular starter on the right-hand side of defence this season.

The full-back captained Kyoto Sanga during their 2-2 draw with Avispa Fukuoka yesterday, before reports emerged that Charlton had made an approach to sign him later in the day.

It remains to be seen whether the Addicks will return with an improved offer for Fukuda, as they will need to activate his release clause if they are going to complete a deal to sign him.

Charlton must meet release clause for Fukuda

If Charlton are going to complete a deal to sign Fukuda permanently rather than on loan with an option to buy, they will need to meet the release clause in his contract, as per Will Pickworth of the Daily Mail.

The 24-year-old is set to be out of contract at the end of January next year, but it seems as though Kyoto Sanga are happy to keep him unless the release clause is met as they compete for the title at the top of the J1 League.

It would take an offer of £800,000 for Charlton to activate Fukuda's release clause and complete a deal to sign him this summer, but it is said to be uncertain whether they will return with another bid after their initial proposal was turned down.

The Addicks have already strengthened at the back with the additions of goalkeeper Thomas Kaminski, left-footed defender Amari'i Bell and centre-back Reece Burke, while new signing Rob Apter featured in the advanced right-wing-back position vacated by the departure of Thierry Small during his first pre-season friendly for the club against HNK Gorica at the weekend.

It is clear that Jones wants to ensure his side have the required quality to continue their impressive defensive record at the level above, but it remains to be seen whether they will add to their summer spending total by bringing Fukuda to The Valley for £800,000.

Charlton are in the market for a right-back

Despite the fact they had one of the most impressive right-backs in League One last season in Kayne Ramsay, and have also brought in Joe Rankin-Costello and Rob Apter who are both capable of operating at right-wing back, Charlton are clearly in the market for another right-sided defender this summer.

The Addicks had a £1 million bid rejected for Hibernian right-back Lewis Miller last week, which suggests they have the funds available to sign Fukuda for £800,000 if they are willing to meet his release clause during the current transfer window.
