Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has said that the European champs are looking to sign Dayot Upamecano from RB Leipzig.

With David Alaba’s impending move to Real Madrid at year’s end, the Bundesliga champs could find themselves short in defensive options at the end of the season. The Austrian’s move to the Spanish giants is not a done deal, however, it seems Bayern are already on the lookout to bring in a high-quality replacement in Upamecano.

Despite being just 22-years old, the Frenchman is close to notching up 100 appearances in the German top-flight and he made his full debut for France last year as well. Rummengigge spoke on Bild Live and stated that a potential deal for Upamecano would most likely happen in the summer, not January.

“We will of course deal with it, not only with this player, but in principle,” Rummenigge said, “on the positions where we want to do and have to do something.”

With the young defender signing a new deal just last year, tying him to Leipzig until 2023, his released clause could prove a stumbling block, which is reportedly set at €45 million (£40m/$55m).

“In the time of Corona, the money situation is also an important factor,” Rummenigge said.

Bayern is top of the table; four points clear of Leipzig in second and Jerome Boateng has been in good form for the German champs. There have been rumours of a new deal for the 32-year-old, but Rummenigge did not elaborate on the German’s future.

“Jerome is playing an important role again. The coach is happy with him,” he said. “Accordingly, you will have to ask him this question yourself if you speak to him.”

Leroy Sane was also the topic of conversation with reports indicating that Bayern could be looking to move on the winger who has four goals and five assists this campaign, but Rummenigge stated he was going nowhere.

“He has a five-year contract,” he said. “That would be nonsense. We need this type of player. Of course he will stay with Bayern. And I am convinced: He will be a success here.”
