Manchester United may have just gained an advantage in the pursuit of long-term target, Dayot Upamecano.

The Red Devils’ defence has been a nightmare this season as a mixture of rotten luck with injuries and really poor individual play, has meant teams have time and time again cut the defensive structure to shreds.

This was on display in the last two games as despite gaining positive results against both Coventry City and Sheffield United, the side from Old Trafford conceded a combined five goals and could have easily given away more if the opposition had been less wasteful.

As a result, United have been linked to numerous defenders in a bid to improve their ailing defence.

Jarrad Branthwaite, Gleison Bremer, Jean-Clair Todibo and Ronald Araujo have been four centre backs most frequently discussed at the club.

In fact, it was even relayed here yesterday that United aim to get an early deal done for young English defender, Branthwaite.

However, the Red Devils have also held a long-term interest in Bayern Munich defender, Upamecano, as it was revealed a year ago that the player was on the verge of a move to Manchester as a 16 year old.

It was reported last month that the now 25 year old could be an option for United if he is looking for a move and he is made available by his current club.

Sports journalist Florian Plettenberg may have just provided the update that the Red Devils have been waiting for.

He claims that Bayern Munich want to buy Bayer Leverkusen’s Jonathan Tah in the summer window, but to do so, they would need to sell a player to raise the necessary funds and also create space in the squad.

According to the Sky reporter, “Upamecano is a candidate” to be sold.

The Frenchman has not always had the easiest time of it at Bayern as he has made high profile errors in the Champions League and struggled badly on the global stage in Manchester City’s win over Bayern in the previous campaign.

Nonetheless, the centre back has been described as being a “man-mountain” but also “blessed with the sort of pace to rival the niftiest forward”.

Should Upamecano truly be available, it will be interesting to see if United do make a move for the man they have chased for such a long time now.
