Another Athletic Club goalkeeper commits to fresh terms | OneFootball

La Liga outfit Athletic Club have on Friday announced the contract renewal of an important member of the club’s first-team ranks.

The player in question? Julen Agirrezabala.

Goalkeeper Agirrezabala is for his part fresh off a season in the Basque Country which will live long in the memory.

The 23-year-old remains the backup options between the posts amongst Ernesto Valverde’s ranks, behind recent Zamora Trophy winner Unai Simón.

And yet, it was Agirrezabala who played a central role in Athletic bringing a close to the club’s painful 40-year wait for fresh silverware.

The Spaniard acted as no.1 across the entirety of Los Leones’ run to eventual glory in the latest edition of the Copa del Rey.

Considered one of the standout backup shot-stoppers in all of La Liga, it should in turn come as little surprise to hear of Agirrezabala, on Friday, seeing his recent efforts rewarded.

As per a statement across Athletic’s website and social media platforms, just weeks on from Unai Simón committing to a new deal, his stand-in has done likewise, through the summer of 2027:

‘Athletic Club goalkeeper Julen Agirrezabala, the Copa final penalty shootout hero, has put pen to paper on a new contract with the Lions until 30 June 2027.

‘This agreement, which includes a clause for Athletic to extend it until 2029, sees the club secure the goalkeeping position for the next few years as last week Unai Simón signed a new deal lasting until 2029.’
