We asked Davey Hat-Trick to give us his match ratings and player comments after Newcastle 1 Brighton 1.

I stayed behind for the lap of appreciation. I know the idea is that the players and staff show their appreciation for the fans but I wanted to show my appreciation for their efforts.

It’s been a frustrating season at times, with a lot of “what ifs”, but everyone who has put on a black and white shirt has done his best to further our cause.

This game was a microcosm of the season. I felt we played reasonably well, but the final ball was often lacking, and Brighton did a good job of frustrating us.

None of our players lacked effort but we lacked quality when it mattered. It seemed to me that just about every player did some things very well and some things badly, so feel free to disagree with my marks.

We can still end the season in sixth place – which would represent a great achievement given the setbacks we’ve faced – but it would have been great to have put daylight between ourselves and our pursuers.

Martin Dubravka – 7

Goal not his fault and had very few scary moments.

He doesn’t have the presence of Nick Pope but he’s done OK deputising for our first-choice keeper

Tino Livramento – 7

Like several of his colleagues, had some good moments and some disappointing moments.

He looked good – very good – driving forward, but was turned easily on a couple of occasions and put a few passes astray.

Looked like he was playing with a dodgy ankle. Trippier’s return could prove timely

Emil Krafth – 6

Another one who’s radar was off on occasion, which put us under unnecessary pressure.

However, also got his head on a lot of Brighton balls and covered his colleagues intelligently

Dan Burn – 8

The pick of our defenders for me.

Commanding in the air and more comfortable on the ball than a lot of his teammates.

His late season renaissance continues

Lewis Hall – 7

A steady game. No ricks but no heroics.

I get the impression we are yet to see the best of him but he’s doing OK.

Sean Longstaff – 6

Scored our equaliser with a crisp finish but seemed to be second-best to the Brighton midfield.

One of those games that seemed to pass him by for long periods.

Bruno Guimaraes – 7

Not his day but that was not down to lack of effort.

Busy, keen and skillful, but nothing came off for him today

Elliot Anderson – 8

I enjoyed his performance today, particularly in the first half.

Enterprising, bold and productive – a good assist for our goal.

Jacob Murphy – 6.5

Another player who had decent moments and poorer ones.

Looked good on the ball, worked hard and passed well.

Everywhere except into the box.

Alexander Isak – 5

Only had the one half-chance I can recall and other than that was pretty anonymous.

Some of that was down to him, some was lack of service, and some was a good performance by the Brighton defence.

However, this was his poorest display in weeks.

Anthony Gordon – 7

Worked hard, made inroads, but there was very little to show for it.

I’d have subbed him off instead of Murphy, not because I thought he was playing badly, but because he looked knackered after 55 minutes.

However, with Wilson on sick leave again, he was the only person to cover Isak when he went off.

Harvey Barnes – 5

I like Barnes but he didn’t do much today.

He plays better when he has space to run into.

Against a packed and deep defence like Brighton’s, he’s less effective.

Did have one shot, but other than that, didn’t trouble our opponents.

Joelinton – 5.5

Added steel and purpose today but it was too little too late.

He’s getting up to speed and I’d love to see him start against manure. That will be his sort of game.

Miguel Almiron – 5

Livened things up when he came on, not least because he got a yellow card for diving and got an ‘assist’ for a goal chalked off for his offside.

Kieran Trippier – N/A

Wasn’t on for long but I’d like to see him back for the last couple of games. He may just be the difference.
