Here I’m going to look back at some of the Newcastle United goals in the early noughties.

Goals that defined this period and slightly beyond.

Duncan Ferguson v Manchester United 2000

Big Dunc gathered the ball at chest height with his back to goal, 20 yards from from the target, on the right.

Quick as a flash he had turned and smashed a left foot shot high into the top corner of the net.

Craig Bellamy v Sunderland 2002

The game was barely a minute old when Newcastle dispossessed Sunderland near the halfway line.

The fastest man on the pitch Craig Bellamy accelerated away from everyone in sight and bore down on goal.

He calmly drew the goalkeeper from his line before gently sliding the ball into the corner of the net.

Alan Shearer v Everton 2002

Shearer’s greatest ever Newcastle goal came in the dying embers of a clash in which the Toon snatched victory from the jaws of defeat.

The ball was punted high and Shola Ameobi won the ball in the air 25 yards from goal.

As the ball dropped, it was Big Al who reacted quickest and he caught the ball right-footed on the volley to send an unstoppable shot into the the top corner.

Laurent Robert v Tottenham Hotspur 2004

Robert was hanging deep outside of the box as Newcastle prepared to take a corner from the right.

The corner was swung outwards and finally reached the Frenchmen who systematically pounded a left foot volley into the top right hand corner of the goal ftom 25 yards.

Alan Shearer v Chelsea 2004

Shearer received the ball to the left of centre 30 yards from goal.

There seemed to be nothing on but he turned swiftly inside and held his marker Marcel Desailly off, before smashing the ball past the stranded Chelsea keeper.

Patrick Kluivert v Chelsea 2005 (FA Cup)

The winning goal against Champions elect Chelsea arrived as early as the 4th minute.

The ball was played out to the left wing where the cross was belted in towards Kluivert.

He rose like a salmon outjumping everyone at the near post, thundering a header from 10 yards into the top corner.

Emre v Sunderland 2005

With the score locked at 2-2 in the second half Newcastle were awarded a free kick 25 yards from goal.

From the angle of his run up it looked like it was going to take something special to breach the Sunderland wall.

Within the blink of an eye, Emre had swung the ball around the defenders and beyond the fully stretched out goalkeeper as the ball cascaded into the net.
