The comments coming after Gareth Southgate named his preliminary 33 man squad for this summer’s European Championships in Germany.

Anthony Gordon making this squad, Marcus Rashford not…

“For whatever reason his (Marcus Rashford’s) body language just hasn’t been there this season.

“In terms of his workrate, the effort that he is putting in.

“He has not been good enough.

“He plays on that left hand side and says he doesn’t want to play centre-forward.

“When you look at the likes of Anthony Gordon all season, he has done very well.

“We know that Phil Foden can play on the left, [Premier League] Player of the Season.

“I think there are too many options on that left hand side that are playing too well to warrant getting left out.

“So, if Marcus Rashford went to the European Championships] and Anthony Gordon didn’t go, people would go, ‘What’s going on here? It makes no sense.’”

Darren Bent is spot on with this, on so many levels.

The basic stats are more than enough.

This 2023/24 Premier League season saw Anthony Gordon scoring 11 goals and getting 10 assists.

Marcus Rashford just the seven PL goals an two assists.

This is before we even get to the body language issues that Darren Bent points out.

Anthony Gordon has been non-stop in tracking back and working hard for the team.

Whereas Marcus Rashford so often, hasn’t even looked like he wants to be on the pitch.

This is the full 33 man preliminary England Euro 2024 squad named by Gareth Southgate on Tuesday – 21 May 2024:

Goalkeepers: Dean Henderson (Crystal Palace), Jordan Pickford (Everton), Aaron Ramsdale (Arsenal), James Trafford (Burnley)

Defenders: Jarrad Branthwaite (Everton), Lewis Dunk (Brighton), Joe Gomez (Liverpool), Marc Guehi (Crystal Palace), Ezri Konsa (Aston Villa), Harry Maguire (Manchester United), Jarell Quansah (Liverpool), Luke Shaw (Manchester United), John Stones (Manchester City), Kieran Trippier (Newcastle), Kyle Walker (Manchester City)
