‘Fresh offer’ made: INEOS on red alert as Ornstein delivers potentially catastrophic blow to United’s Mbeumo pursuit

With Brentford already highly reluctant to part ways with talisman Bryan Mbeumo, they could close off the prospect of his departure entirely if they lose his prolific partner.

It was reported earlier this week that the Bees would be unwilling to sell both Mbeumo and Yoane Wissa in the same window, with the latter garnering concrete interest from Tottenham Hotspur.

Spurs have since agreed deals for Mohammed Kudus and Morgan Gibbs-White, leaving Nottingham Forest now floundering to replace their key man and instantly submitting an offer for forward Wissa.

David Ornstein confirmed just hours after Spurs activated Gibbs-White’s £60 million release clause that Forest had ‘renewed their pursuit’ with a ‘fresh offer’ for the 28-year-old. However, their proposal falls below £25m, and Brentford plan to stand firm in their £50m valuation, meaning there’s work to do in negotiations if a deal is to materialise in the coming days.

Nonetheless, the rapid developments will – or at least they should – have left INEOS on red alert to pull their fingers out and meet the West London outfit’s demands for Mbeumo, or else they risk missing out on him entirely.

United’s Mbeumo saga could come to a sorry end

Given they’ve spent over four weeks in talks, failing to complete their acquisition would come as a substantial embarrassment.

United produced their opening bid of £55m at the start of June and saw it swiftly rebuffed. It then took them until the final days of the month to return with an improved figure of £55m plus £7m in add-ons, which takes it to the fee they paid for Matheus Cunha (£62.5m) – albeit some will be in instalments.

This, too, was turned down by the Bees last week, and the Red Devils have yet to increase their proposition.
