City’s summer signing Iman Beney will continue her journey in Euro 2025 after Switzerland’s last-gasp 1-1 draw with Finland ensured their progress through to the quarter-final stage of the competition.
The stakes couldn’t have been higher as the tournament hosts faced the Finns in Geneva with the game a straight shoot-out to go through to the last eight alongside Norway from Group A.
It was easy mathematics for the Swiss with a win or draw enough to progress following a 2-0 win over Iceland and a close 2-1 loss to table-toppers Norway which put them level on four points with their opponents but one goal ahead on goal difference heading into this encounter.
Pia Sundhage selected an unchanged side for this match held at Stade de Geneva, meaning Beney – who signed for Andree Jegerletz’s Blues in June from BSC Young Boys Frauen, playing as right wing-back alongside Viola Calligaris, Julia Stierli, Noelle Maritz and Nadine Riesen, with the quintet all protecting Livia Peng between the sticks.
It was a cagey match throughout but really came alive in the closing stages with Natalia Kuikka’s 79th minute penalty for Finland looking likely to send the hosts out.
Beney was replaced on 82 minutes by former Aston Villa midfielder Alisha Lehmann in a triple change by the hosts.
And buoyed on by a passionate home support, Switzerland didn’t give in and equalised in the second of seven minutes of stoppage time, Riola Xhemaili bagging the all-important leveller from close-range.
The Swiss will now play either Spain or Italy in Stadion Wankdorf in Bern on Friday 18 July.
Montserrat Tome’s Spanish side currently top Group B with a maximum six points from their two games after 5-0 and 6-2 triumphs over Portugal and Belgium.
They face second-placed Italy tomorrow with the winner taking on Beney’s Switzerland who were ecstatic following the late drama this evening.
