Yesterday it was reported by Wayne Veysey for Football Insider that Manchester City had agreed on personal terms with Nottingham Forest midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White. When the report came out, it was a move that didn’t make much sense from a City point of view. Manchester City’s summer signings of Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Cherki did indicate that City had moved on from signing Gibbs-White.
Now it has emerged that Gibbs-White is on the verge of completing a £60 million move to Tottenham. There is seemingly no chance of City signing Gibbs-White based on today’s news. But that isn’t a blow for Pep Guardiola’s side as their midfield appears to be set for next season.
Fabrizio Romano has reported that Tottenham Hotspur have triggered the £60 million release clause to sign Morgan Gibbs-White from Nottingham Forest. Furthermore, Romano reports that Gibbs-White is set to undergo a medical with Tottenham in the next 24 hours.
When Wayne Veysey’s report of Manchester City agreeing personal terms with Morgan Gibbs-White the potential move didn’t make much sense. As it stands Pep Guardiola’s squad is stacked with midfielders. Unless two or more midfielders left City this summer they do not need another midfielder. There are more pressing needs for City to address. Signing a right-back would be one. Selling players would be another. Signing Morgan Gibbs-White didn’t appear high on Manchester City’s list or priorities, especially after the summer signings of Rayan Cherki and Tijjani Reijnders.
Morgan Gibbs-White is now seemingly off to Tottenham Hotspur. As a player, Gibbs-White would of been of immense value to Manchester City. But it’s a move that won’t happen now and in truth, once City signed Reijnders and Cherki it was a move that had come off the board for Manchester City.
