Real Madrid are reportedly eyeing Aymeric Laporte, a defender for Al Nassr, as a potential addition to their squad.

According to a report from El Larguero, Laporte is open to taking a significant pay cut to return to Europe, however, Al Nassr are standing in the way of this possible move.

Real Madrid’s need for a solid defender has become more pressing after they missed out on signing Leny Yoro.

With Nacho and Rafa Marin leaving the team, the club is actively looking for defensive reinforcements. While several names have been floated in the media, Laporte’s name has been seriously considered within the team.

The operation is complex

The challenge for Real Madrid lies in the complexities of signing Laporte. Although no formal talks have been initiated with Al Nassr or the player, the club is aware that securing the former Manchester City defender will be difficult.

One significant hurdle is Laporte’s current salary, which is around €20 million per season. This figure could be a major deterrent for Madrid, despite their belief that reaching an agreement with Al Nassr might not be too complicated.

But, now, the converse is being claimed as the aforementioned report states that Laporte, who won the UEFA Euro 2024 with Spain, would be willing to reduce his salary but his club might pose an issue.

Ancelotti wants a defender

At present, Real Madrid are focusing on maintaining their current roster of central defenders. The team includes Antonio Rudiger, Eder Militao and David Alaba, who is still recovering from his own ACL injury.

Aurelien Tchouameni is seen as an emergency option, and there is Jesus Vallejo too. Despite having these players, the club recognises the need for a top-quality, experienced defender.

Carlo Ancelotti is particularly keen on bringing in a high-calibre centre-back to strengthen the team’s defensive line. He prefers to secure a proven, elite player rather than making do with the existing options.

His vision is clear: he wants to bolster the defence with a top-notch addition, or he would rather stick with the current squad.

Real Madrid are waiting for the right market opportunity to arise. Until then, the team will rely on its existing defenders.

The pursuit of Laporte remains a possibility, but it hinges on navigating the financial and logistical challenges posed by his current situation with Al Nassr.
