The Group Stage of EURO 2024 is now complete and we have our last 16 placings as nations compete for glory in Germany.

But who were the standout stars from the last two weeks of action to make our best XI? Let’s find out…

GK: Giorgi Mamardashvili (Georgia)

His performance against the Czech Republic, in which he made nine saves, was the standout goalkeeping display of the tournament to date. His side may be heading home early but that is through no fault of the Valencia star.

RB: Mert Müldür (Turkey)

A standout in both of his side’s wins, particularly in an attacking sense, Müldür has caught the attention with his relentless running down the right flank. In addition, he also netted what is arguably the goal of the tournament so far thanks to his sumptuous volley against Georgia.

CB: Pepe (Portugal)

In a tournament where he set the record for being the oldest player ever to feature at the Euros at 41 years old and 113 days, the Porto veteran continues to prove that where he is concerned, age is very much just a number. Incredibly at that age, he remains one of the game’s elite central defenders.

CB: Jaka Bijol (Slovenia)

Among more heralded team-mates Benjamin Šeško and Jan Oblak, the Udinese defender has been Slovenia’s star player so far this summer and has grabbed the limelight for himself. His interceptions and prowess in one-on-one duels were a particular standout, in addition to his range of passing which helped alleviate the pressure on his defence when on the back foot.

LB: Marc Cucurella (Spain)

Although he only appeared in two of Spain’s games, that was all the Chelsea defender needed to impress, with stellar performances against Croatia (who he registered a vital goal-line clearance against) and Italy to firmly cement himself as Luis de la Fuente’s first choice left-back.

CM: Fabián Ruiz (Spain)

Like Cucurella, Ruiz only needed Spain’s opening two fixtures to impress. It was in the opener against Croatia though in which the midfielder truly wowed with one of the performances of the tournament so far, schooling the opposition in the centre of the park as he scored and assisted in picking up UEFA’s Man of the Match award.

CM: Bernardo Silva (Portugal)

Key to turning Portugal’s opening game around with his constant availability for the ball and creating chances, he was also effortlessly outstanding in the dismantling of Turkey in game two. There have been several standouts so far for Roberto Martínez’s men but he’s been the key man.

CM: Marcel Sabitzer (Austria)

The Borussia Dortmund star has taken his excellent club form onto the international stage, thriving in helping an unfancied Austria side to top their group ahead of France and Netherlands. Against the Dutch in their final game, he won a well-deserved Man of the Match having capped his performance off with a dramatic late winner.

RW: Jamal Musiala (Germany)

Arguably Germany’s star man from an impressive group stage. His movement has caused problems for every side he has faced so far, floating into dangerous pockets off the right flank, and he registered two goals for the host nation.

ST: Georges Mikautadze (Georgia)

Coming off the back of an impressive season in France, the 23-year-old carried his fantastic form into the European Championship, where he is the only player to find the net in all three of his country’s group games. He netted against Turkey in the opener before two ice-cool penalties in the ensuing fixtures fired Georgia to an unlikely last 16 place in their first ever major tournament.

LW: Cody Gakpo (Netherlands)

Along with Musiala, no player has scored more goals in the tournament so far than the Dutchman (not accounting for those pesky own goals of course) who continues to thrive at major competitions for his country.
