Having secured a 4-0 lead in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League quarterfinal against Borussia Dortmund last week, Barcelona were the favourites to advance to the semifinal through the second leg last night.
Borussia Dortmund, however, did not make it easy for the Catalans in any capacity, especially after pulling back an early goal from the penalty spot.
While Hansi Flick’s men did hold on to the narrow 1-0 deficit until half-time, an early goal from the hosts in the second half cut their lead to just two goals. A timely own goal, however, restored the three-goal cushion and took the steam out of the hosts.
Dortmund did eventually get a third goal but it was too late to mount any form of a comeback.
Barça Universal brings you the player rating from Borussia Dortmund 3-1 Barcelona (3-5 agg).
The goalkeeper did not have his best performance, especially after his night began with an injury in the warm-up. Not much he could have done about either goal conceded.
The big low from his game, needless to say, was the unnecessary penalty he conceded to offer the hosts inroads into the tie.
Martin replaced the injured Alejandro Balde in the lineup and did a reasonable job defensively but was all over the place with his distribution.
Often lost possession and handed it right back to the opponents on a night when the team struggled to dominate regardless.
The Uruguayan star replaced Martinez in the lineup given the veteran’s yellow card situation and was put up to a tough test at the Signal Iduna Park.
Was up to the challenge in terms of his defensive presence and duel-winning but his distribution proved to be a liability at times. Nevertheless, he did pull off some vital and regular clearances.
Made a poor clearance that gifted Dortmund their third goal on the night.
The youngster was tasked with taking the brunt of the responsibility of playing out of the back last night with Inigo Martinez rested, and he struggled to do so with his usual flair given Dortmund’s relentless press.
Did decently in defence apart from that aspect and was unbelievably calm under the pressure of the situation for his age.
Kounde was defensively on point for great parts of the game but had little to no attacking presence in the second leg against Dortmund.
Should have done better in preventing the second goal from being conceded but did not do too much wrong apart from his subdued ventures forward.
The youngster replaced Pedri in the starting lineup and did well defensively, yet failed to bring the same control that his compatriot brings. Was decent in possession but could not help dictate the game in any capacity.
The Dutchman was the only Barcelona player who showed the ability to control the game, retain possession and orchestrate attacks although his productivity too fell without Pedri.
Yet, did well to hold the fortress and lead the midfield on a night when his usual partner-in-crime required the rest.

A wildly contrasting performance from Fermin compared to the game last week against the same opposition. With Barcelona not dominating the possession, he did not get into attacking positions half as regularly.
Created the own goal that restored Barcelona’s three-goal lead early in the second half. Wasted a golden chance to equalise in the 63rd minute.
The Brazilian was completely out of his element against Borussia Dortmund and could not even capitalise on the few counter-attacking chances he was offered despite it being his forte.
Was reasonably good with his distribution but lacked the composure and cutting-edge in front of goal.
Yamal looked far from his best through the first half and did not create much threat for the visitors at Signal Iduna Park.
Upped his game to an extent after the break and began holding onto the ball more to offer more control, yet he was far from the peak of his powers.

The Polish striker surprisingly looked like the most fresh and sharp of Barcelona’s three attackers on the night and was great with his movements.
Liked up well with the midfield and even set Raphinha free on goal in the first period, only for the Brazilian to scuff the opportunity.
Came on close to the hour mark and immediately restored all of Barcelona’s control of the proceedings. Brought the right decisions, distribution and calmness under pressure that the team lacked in his absence.
