After Borussia Dortmund lost the first leg of their UEFA Champions League quarterfinal against Barcelona 0-4, I’d resigned myself to the fact that this would be a loss. Given the context of this season, there was no conceivable way, in my mind, that Borussia Dortmund could turn things around. If this was to be our last UCL match for some time, then I just wanted to enjoy it. I wasn’t disappointed.
Borussia Dortmund showed up for this match and handed FC Barcelona their first defeat of the calendar year, a 3-1 score line, though we still lost the tie 3-5 on aggregate. Still, Borussia Dortmund had me believing in this match, and that’s one reason I love them.
This match saw Borussia Dortmund create 3.85 xG to Barcelona’s .49 xG, with a hat trick from Serhou Guirassy, and a devastating own goal from Ramy Bensebaini, which killed Dortmund’s momentum when they were at their most dangerous. On another day, this could have been the miracle we were hoping for. But it was still a good match, and if we don’t play in the Champions League next season, I’ll still remember our final match being a win against Barcelona. What’s more? We didn’t let Robert Lewandowski score! Here are my takeaways from this match: keep reading, they’re actually positive!
