Scorers: Neves 38′

New signing Alexander Isak didn’t receive a visa in time for the matchday squad against Wolves as Bruno Guimarães also missed out through injury.

It was Wolves who went closest to scoring inside five minutes as Pedro Neto pounced on a cross from the right but saw his effort loop just over the crossbar.

Up the other end though it was Joe Willock who almost opened the scoring for Newcastle as his toe poke squeezed past the outside of the post.

This end-to-end game then saw the home side spurn a golden opportunity as Matheus Nunes headed wide went it looked easier to score.

But they did get their goal on 38 minutes as Ruben Neves fired in a stunning effort from the edge of the area.

After the break there was some consternation from Wolves supporters as Fabian Schär went high on Pedro Neto but only saw a yellow card.

Wolves thought they had doubled their lead on 81 minutes but the goal was disallowed by VAR after a foul in the build up.

Scorers: Fornals 74′

West Ham were looking for their first points of the campaign after a rocky start with Aston Villa hoping a front two of Danny Ings and Ollie Watkins could do the business.

It was Watkins who was involved early on as he crashed a header in in but VAR ruled out the goal as the ball was deemed to have gone out of play before contact.

David Moyes’s Hammers continued to sit tight and wait for any chances on the counter-attack but they didn’t come in an uninspiring first half.

Into the second half and it was West Ham who really should have opened the scoring as Jarrod Bowen raced in on goal but had his one-on-one effort blocked brilliantly by Matty Cash.
