As Cecilio Waterman’s late strike stunned his international teammates, Celtic centre-back Cameron Carter-Vickers remained a spectator, avoiding the heartbreak on the pitch as the United States’ title defence came to a crushing end at SoFi Stadium in California.

The USA will now meet Canada on Sunday in the battle for a bronze medal, after Jesse Marsch’s side endured their own setback with a 2-0 defeat to Mexico in the semi-final.

Sunday’s match offers Pochettino and his squad an opportunity to restore some pride following their painful loss to Panama. Carter-Vickers will be eager to feature, having last represented the USA at Copa America last year, earning his 18th senior cap.

Meanwhile, Carter-Vickers’ Celtic teammate, Auston Trusty, was initially named in the tournament squad but had to pull out before the competition began. Pochettino attributed the central defender’s absence to a “medical issue,” with reports indicating it may be related to the calf injury that caused him to miss the recent loss to theRangers in the Glasgow Derby last Sunday.
