It is more than likely that Celtic will convincingly win the league this season despite their recent loss at the hands of the Rangers at Parkhead. Also, they are still in contention for a domestic treble, having booked their place in the semi-finals of the Scottish Cup as well. Of course, they cannot allow that to hide the issues that they have faced in recent times.

One would hope that the Glasgow Derby comes as a wake-up call. This was their second straight loss against the Rangers and the third time on the trot that they have conceded thrice against them.

One player that Celtic missed on the day was their captain Callum McGregor. He had been dealing with an issue ahead of the match and the decision was taken not to risk him, a sensible one considering the Hoops' considerable lead over the Rangers.

Chris Sutton has also called out some Celtic fans regarding the McGregor situation. He wrote in his column in the Daily Record:

"There’s been some supporters who have raised doubts about the captain. Sunday should shut them right up.McGregor was a major miss, not just in terms of his leadership but as a player. The flow wasn’t the same, the ball wasn’t being moved around with the same speed, there were too many square balls and back passes.Too many players took the safe option. McGregor is the one man who is prepared to take the ball in tight areas, commit opponents, either spin then and go past or pick out the right ball to get Celtic moving through the press."

A lot of these games are won and lost in midfield. And it is safe to say that Celtic struggled to assert themselves in the middle of the park in the absence of their captain.

It is very easy to take someone like McGregor for granted. But very few players in the world can bring what he does to the table.

He is an ever-present, who has been playing constantly for Celtic for years now. Rarely does he take a day off, unless it is due to an injury. On top of that, a lot of what he does does not show up on the stat sheet. It is not just about goals and assists. There a lot of things he does, which make the Hoops a much better team.
