Enzo Maresca has not ruled out the possibility of Nicolas Jackson leaving Chelsea before the end of the summer transfer window.
The striker’s place in the first team is under threat following the arrival of forwards Joao Pedro and Liam Delap from Brighton and Ipswich Town respectively.
Jackson has been linked with Arsenal, Aston Villa, Manchester United and Newcastle, while clubs in Saudi Arabia are also interested in signing him.
As it stands the Magpies appear to be the likeliest destination for the 24-year-old should he leave Stamford Bridge, given their need for a new frontman in the event that Alexander Isak joins Liverpool.
“Nico is okay,” said Maresca on Thursday ahead of their first pre-season friendly against Bayer Leverkusen. “When the transfer window is open, unfortunately, or fortunately, anything can happen so this also involves Nico’s situation at the moment.
“Two new strikers arrived in the USA, Joao and Liam, so we’ll see what happens.”
Eleven players have left the club permanently this summer and even more are set to follow suit. Armando Broja, Carney Chukwuemeka, Christopher Nkunku, Ben Chilwell and Raheem Sterling appear likely to leave.
Maresca, who has been nominated for the Ballon d’Or best coach of the year, says that he is only “working with the ones we want” and Chelsea call or text him when a player departs.
“The situation, I think, is quite clear. They are training, I guess they are waiting for a solution,” said the Italian.
“But when they leave, it’s just the club that texts me or calls me, even Tom (media officer), he just mentioned to me that Lesley (Ugochukwu) joined Burnley.
“I have this kind of news from him or from the club because I don’t pay attention to the ones that need to leave. I just focus on how we prepare the session, how we can win games.
“For sure, it’s much better to work with 25 players than the biggest number, no doubt. In this moment, we are working with the ones that we want.”
