FLW's Sheffield United Fan Pundit Jimmy casts doubts over a potential Palmeiras move for Gus Hamer.
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more...
Brazilian giants Palmeiras are interested in Sheffield United's Gus Hamer, As per Brazilian journalist Diego Firmino,
The 28-year-old was born in Brazil and moved to the Netherlands as a child, before beginning his football career in Europe.
The midfield magician scored 10 goals and provided eight assists in the Championship last term, and FLW's Blades Fan Pundit Jimmy can't see either the club or Hamer entertaining a move.
As per the reports from Firmino, a deal is expected to be difficult. Sheffield United do not plan to let their star midfielder go easily, with the £13.5 million sitting as the initial asking price.
It is said that Palmeiras are considering their options and are of the belief that the midfielder could be tempted to represent a major Brazilian outfit for the first time.
Hamer is seen as the ideal profile to replace Colombian midfielder Richard Rios, who left the club for Portuguese giants Benfica this week. Head coach Abel Ferreira is understood to appreciate the qualities which Hamer could bring.
"Personally, I am not convinced," said Blades fan Jimmy when asked whether he believes Hamer could be tempted by the move.
"That's not to say he wouldn't be interested, but it is a huge life-altering move. It is a big move, though, so if they were able to offer him money that we couldn't, then he may well be interested."
"From what we understand, though, he is very settled in Sheffield. And it is probably more of a threat that he moves to Burnley, or Leeds, than Brazil."
Jimmy was, though, keen to address the fact that Palmeiras may be able to throw more money at Hamer in comparison to newly promoted Premier League sides: "But, if they can offer what other domestic clubs can't, then he may well be interested."
"What I will say is that it will have to be a lot more than £13.5 million, because he is probably worth double that to us. So I don't think we would entertain anything less than £20 million to get talks going, and nor should we."
Hamer arrived at the club in the summer of 2023 upon their return to the Premier League in a £15 million deal from Coventry City. He has another two years left on his current deal, which could give the Blades protection against clubs looking to poach him.
The trouble they will have is with Hamer's ambition. His desire to play at the highest level will make it incredibly tough for United to retain his services beyond this summer.
You can't expect someone of his quality to be happy remaining in the second tier for too long. He deserves another shot in the top flight.
