Rangers prepare to sell Ben Davies with clubs ready to pay £4M | OneFootball

Rangers are to sell Ben Davies after interest was expressed in the ‘defender’ amid confirmation from sources that the club was open to offers.

Michael Beale dropped a bizarre hint that he was looking to keep the ex-Liverpool stopper at Ibrox some weeks ago, but it appears this was just his usual lip service and Davies will be sold for the fee he was purchased for, assuming such a bid arrives from one of the many Championship sides in for him.

It marks the end of one of the poorest defenders Rangers have had in recent times, with Davies admittedly composed enough on the ball, but completely lacking a cohesive partnership with anyone, and, as Ibrox Noise said many times, effectively being exactly the same defender as Connor Goldson.

Rangers’ soft-centre through defence was in no small part down to those two being paired, and it’s very telling since both of them got injured, Rangers’ defence has been a bit more physical with the emergence of John Souttar as the club’s star defender.

And Davies hasn’t been missed at all.

Signed as a ‘replacement’ for the bulldozer that was Calvin Bassey, Davies was a very odd addition. He was rejected by a host of clubs and even when Liverpool were down to emergency players, he wasn’t used.

He has neither the power, the pace, or indeed the defending quality of Bassey, and Rangers are quite happy to cut the club free of him – he’s just too slight and lightweight.

This is not to smear Davies, he came here to do a job, and did what he could. He was just such a staggering purchase that didn’t seem to add anything, and only appeared to come to Rangers because Giovanni van Bronckhorst appeared to want a leftie.

Unfortunately he was well short of the quality needed and never had a single standout game where he cut the mustard.

We wish him well, but it’s absolutely correct to sell him – he’s not the stuff to play for Rangers and we’ll need more than him going forward.

Ibrox Noise has reservations that both of our new additions are barely any better than Davies, but hopefully they will prove us completely and utterly wrong.

Rangers need Premier League quality players if we’re to ascend back to being Champions and Champions League contenders. Guys from League One and lower Championship aren’t the right stuff.
