📈 Power Rankings: Liverpool climb, Barcelona back!

10. Real Madrid (🆕)

Real Madrid enter the Power Rankings for the first time in 2024/25 after an efficient performance to beat Real Betis. It’s lift-off for Kylian Mbappe in the Spanish capital after the marquee recruit scored both goals at the Bernabeu.

After a frustrating first half, Mbappe broke the deadlock with a slotted finish before doubling the lead – and sealing the win – confidently from the spot. All eyes are on the Frenchman this season and he will be delighted to be up and running with Los Blancos.

9. Heidenheim (🆕)

Heidenheim are the early pacesetters in the Bundesliga after roaring to the top of the table with a 4-0 thrashing of Augsburg at the weekend.

After exceeding all expectations to finish eighth in the club’s first-ever Bundesliga campaign last term, Frank Schmidt’s side has shown that was no fluke with successive league wins to start the new season, six goals scored, and none conceded.

Chelsea have been warned ahead of their meeting in this season’s Europa Conference League.

8. Brighton (👍 Last week: 4)

Brighton failed to win for the first time this season but retain their place in our Power Rankings after holding Arsenal to a 1-1 draw at the Emirates. The Seagulls were handed an advantage after Declan Rice’s needless red card but showed real quality to dominate the second half and equalise through the in-form Joao Pedro.

Fabian HĂŒrzeler has made a fantastic start to life on the south coast.

7. RB Leipzig (🆕)

At long last, Bayer Leverkusen’s unbeaten run is over.

After 462 days, Leverkusen lost in the Bundesliga with RB Leipzig the champion’s conquerers at the weekend.

Leipzig were second-best for shots (26 to eight), corners (18 to two) and possession (62% to 38%) but a clinical performance saw Die Roten Bullen come from 2-0 behind to win at the BayArena. Lois Openda was in ruthless mood, as Leipzig sent a statement over their own title credentials.

6. Inter Milan (🆕)

Inter Milan moved to the top of the Serie A table as the champions put on a punishing performance to dismantle Europa League winners Atalanta.

The Italian champions were two goals ahead inside 10 minutes and were four to the good before the hour, sending an ominous warning to the rest of the league with a 4-0 win at the San Siro.

5. Paris Saint-Germain (👎 Last week: 4)

Paris Saint-Germain look too good for the competition in French football again this season, cruising to a 3-1 win at Lille this weekend. The home side might be considered one of the biggest threats to the Parisian side’s domestic dominance but were powerless to prevent PSG from easing to another three points.

Bradley Barcola’s brilliant start to the season continued with a fourth Ligue 1 goal in three appearances, with the teenager stepping up in the absence of the departed Kylian Mbappe.

4. Barcelona (🆕)

Barcelona blitzed Real Valladolid at the weekend as Raphinha helped himself to a hat-trick in a 7-0 win for Hansi Flick’s side. The winger became the seventh Brazilian to score a La Liga hat-trick for the club, with Robert Lewandowski, Jules Kounde, Dani Olmo and Ferran Torres also all on target in a resounding rout of the visitors.

It’s four wins from four for Barca, who have opened up a healthy early lead in the title race.

3. Sporting Lisbon (👎 Last week: 1)

Sporting’s flawless start to the Primeira Liga campaign continued with a 2-0 win over title rivals Porto.

It was not quite the huge scoreline of recent weeks but a performance that again suggested Sporting will be tough to topple as the league’s leading side.

Viktor Gyokeres opened the scoring from the spot to continue his astonishing start to the season. It’s now seven goals and three assists in three appearances for the Swedish striker, who is averaging a goal involvement every 48 minutes.

2. Manchester City (👍 Last week: 3)

Manchester City maintained their perfect start to the Premier League campaign with a 3-1 win at West Ham.

Erling Haaland scored a hat-trick for the second successive week with the Norwegian appearing in a menacing mood again this season. His treble was right out of the top drawer, with West Ham unable to cope with a forward who has now averaged better than a goal per game since moving to the Premier League.

Pep Guardiola’s team, still, are the team to beat.

1. Liverpool (👍 Last week: 7)

Liverpool climb to the top of our Power Rankings table after Arne Slot’s side swatted aside their greatest rivals.

The trip to face Manchester United was billed as the first real acid test for Liverpool’s new head coach but was an examination passed with comfort. Luis Diaz scored twice for the Reds and Mohamed Salah added a third, with the Egyptian continuing his remarkable record at Old Trafford.

Slot has settled into life on Merseyside impressively to date.
